HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu police officers have begun enforcing a ban on sitting and lying down on sidewalks in Chinatown.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the enforcement began Monday after two weeks of handing out warnings.
Officers had issued two warnings by midday Monday. They say they didn't issue citations or make any arrests at the time.
The ban is in effect from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Merchants in Chinatown say they're hoping the ban will result in more visitors and more business.
One community leader says the area is much cleaner. But another says people are loitering in their usual spots.
The expanded ban follows one in Waikiki that was enacted in September.
A police spokeswoman says officers gave out 1,000 cards with information about helpful services during the education period.
